Junior Discovery Time

In the junior syndicate they all have a discovery time on Friday afternoons. What they do is have lots of activities like play-dough, office people and the water trough (where they fill different bottles and cups with water). If it's not raining they also play in the sandpit with the diggers and trucks and they dig lots of holes and hills and sandcastles with the spades outside room thirteen. They play with cardboard boxes, they make tunnels, cubby holes and they play hide and seek. When they play with the play-dough they make cupcakes, cookies and other pretend foods. When they build with blocks they make trucks, boats, bikes, cars, planes and houses. Sometimes they play with bouncy balls. They play soccer and they kick the balls into goals and they sometimes get points for the goals they make.By Aaliyah and Jessie

Room 2's Restaurant

In room 2 we are planning to open a restaurant. We all had to write a letter to the C.E.O (who is our teacher) to apply for jobs in the restaurant. The jobs we could apply for were:kitchenfront of houseteam manager2 other jobsI applied for team manger (along with 4 other people). We had to go through an interview one by one. The interviews took a total of 30 minutes before it was over. We all had 30 minutes of lunchtime left when the interviews were finished. After lunch we had senior sports, after that all the interviewees had to go to the library. We nervously sat on seats and were told that I got the manger position and Luke got 2nd manager. There will be follow up articles about the restaurant so keep checking into the website for the next exciting update. This is Jimmy signing off for Wainuiomata Primary School.By Jimmy

Traveling Performers

Maori Tale with a Modern TwistOn Friday the 11th of June 2010 a family of 5 Maori performers came to our school and did a funny performance. It was about a Maori man teaching the birds to dance at the beginning of time, because the birds used to dance funny. The man felt he was the best and showed off. Another man came and challenged him to a contest to see who was better. The challenge included some funny dancing and some lucky students got to go up onto the stage. A boy named Logan even sang! Everyone laughed and clapped because Logan was only a J2 but he sounded pretty good. Kyanna and her sister were given 2 pois each and they had to follow a poi routine, it looked hard! Then we all left the hall and went back to class to do some work.By Troy

The Buzz of PerformingIn rooms 1,2,7,8 and 9 some people chose to be in Kapa Haka. On Monday the 21st of June we did a performance in the hall in front of the whole school. It was part of a Powhiri to welcome three Manuhere (visitors) from the Education Review Office (E.R.O.). I was in the second row of performers, I was happy to be there. The school came in and sat down. When it was about to start I was so excited. It was at 9:05am when the performance started and we went for about 10 minutes. The person that lead the kapahaka was Rikki (Rikki is Mrs Porter Samules husband) Mrs Porter Samules and Mrs Neho said they were proud of all or us. It went like a flash, then everyone went to jump jam. Mrs Porter Samules said how proud she was of our performance. This is Jimmy signing off for Wainuiomata Primary School.By Jimmy

More Kites

Senior KitesA lucky few seniors got to make special Maori kites with Rikki. Our design was based around a triangle 1 metre and a half upwards and 1 meter wide. Working in groups, It took us about 3 hours to make one. Why did we decide to do it? Because our topic is kites. Rooms 1, 7, 8 and 9 were each allowed to send two people to join in and room 2 was allowed 3 people. The people in room 2 had the extra job of taking photos and helping Rikki. Rikki showed us how to put the string around and up, to securely tie the kite together. He told the boys to go and make their own kite, But they spent too much time shouting out loud because they couldn’t decide who was in charge. They haven’t finished theirs yet.By Jimmy and Troy

In Case of Emergency

New Water TankAt Wainuiomata Primary School we have got a water tank for emergencies. If there is no water we would go to the water tank and get some. You may be wondering “how does the water get into the water tank?”Originally the school wanted it to be filled by rain water from the roof but because of health concerns it was decided that it would be filled from the community water supply. The tank has a tap on the side to access the water inside. We questioned Mr Worboys about the water tank and this is what he had to say:Why did we get the water tank?"Because we are a civil defence centre. If there is an emergency we can help other people."How many litres can it hold?"5000 litres."Why did you pick that place for the tank?"Because it is close to the hall."Why did you choose that colour for the tank?"To keep the school colours, at least it’s not yellow!" The water tank is 2.23 meters high and 6.06 meters around. That’s our water tank and this is Jimmy and Shannia signing off for Wainuiomata Primary School.By Jimmy and Shannia

Lollypop's for Junior 2

Juniors Cut Loose at Lollypop's PlaylandWhen the Junior 2s went to Lollypop's Playland in Petone, a bus took them from school to Petone at 9.15 a.m. Everyone had a great time. Kieren (one of the children on the trip) noticed the balls in the ball pit were “all different colours” and that they were “shiny”.Kieren said that his best thing was “a short rope that lead to a slide”. Ms. Williams was one of the teachers who went to Lollypop’s Playland.I had some questions for her:What were the children learning about?“Different types of equipment used in the playground.”What did you think was the best part?“Children having lots fun, playing together and getting lots of physical activity. We had a beautiful sunny day.”Were there any problems? “Not enough room on the bus, Children had to get rides from parents in their cars.”Did anything funny or unusual happen?“Children were going crazy on all the equipment!”That’s Wainuiomata Primary School this week and I’m Jimmy signing off.By Jimmy
