Our News
We are trialling an enviro newsletter this term to keep everyone informed on what we are doing at school and what we are aiming for.
Our school has achieved a Silver status through Enviroschools, and the children are working very hard to maintain and improve that standard.
This term we are concentrating on ‘Nude food’ and 'Reduce' out of the mantra ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’. Our aim is to have a zero plastic waste school.
Beeswax lunch wraps
The students in the junior block have had fun making sandwiches to learn how to use their beeswax wrap and help keep our school plastic waste free. Each student was given a care sheet with how to care for the wrap but if you need any help or have any questions about the wraps, please talk to Ms Hunt in Room 14.
Room 7 Tin Can Collecting Competition
Room 7 has taken on the responsibility of collecting and recycling cans. Each class is to collect cans and a prize will be presented to the class that collects the most. You can give the cans to your child's teacher anytime this term.
Parent help
This term we are asking parents and whanau to look at their workplaces to see if there are items that can be reused at school e.g. coffee grounds, paper from printing, plants, cardboard boxes. This is helping to reinforce the children's learning about environmental practices. Over the term we will put out specific requests for help with jobs we may need a hand with. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
A big thank you to the parents who came and helped at our two beeswax wrap workshops. Thanks to XL cafe in the village for donating coffee grounds, Excelsior bakery for paper bag donations, Pencarrow tree services for the mulch and Noelene for her help with the garden and providing plants.
TerraCycle
TerraCycle is recycling for non-recyclable items such as toothbrushes, coffee capsules and pens. There is currently a TerraCycle bin outside Room 3, but we are hoping to expand this around the school.
Plant sales
Plant sales are Thursday 2:45-3pm outside the office. We are offering a wide range of seasonal vegetable seedlings, native trees, succulents etc.
Enviro meeting
There are enviro groups meetings regularly through the term for parents, whanau and community members keen to get involved in the enviro group. Come along and find out different ways you can help.
If you have any feedback, comments or if you want to share your ideas please see Kristen Fraser in Room 3 or email kristenf@wainuiomata.school.nz
Best wishes from the
